Father's Day

I wrote this some years ago and there is no way I could write it now.

So many more things I could and probably should say but not now. Let's celebrate fathers who probably don't realise how valuable what they do is; how important they are. And spare a thought for those who really need their dad but for whatever reason, their dad just can't be there for them.

My Father

Where were you, oh my father,
As I grew into a man?
When I needed you to show me who I am,
When I needed to see strength and gentleness;
Where were you?

Where were you oh my father,
As I needed a dad?
When I looked for boundaries and limits,
When I looked for love and support;
Where were you?

Where were you oh my father,
As everything went wrong?
When I so needed the person you never were,
When I longed for meaning and direction,
Where were you?

You weren’t there oh my father,
Please don’t claim to be my dad,
Whenever I have a birthday
When you do that it rips me apart –
Where were you?

Where were you oh my father,
I can forgive the past.
The future must be strange my father,
Whatever comes you are not my dad –
You weren’t there.
