Writing to My MP...

I have just written the following to my MP with respect to the Government's attempt to force the Withdrawal Act Bill (which is the necessary legislation to allow the UK to leave the European Union) through the commons in record time.

My MP is very much in favour of leaving the European Union - potentially on so-called No Deal terms.

Dear Mr Conservative,

I note with some dismay that you were among 308 Members of Parliament who voted in favour of The European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill business motion (Division 5, Hansard column 923, 22nd October 2019).

Your long and consistent support for leaving the European Union is of course, a matter of public record and something upon which we have previously corresponded. Although I note that your response to me involved you answering none of my questions. However, the notion that any Member of Parliament could support this business motion to attempt to pass the entire Bill in less than three days is astounding.

As you are no doubt aware the Withdrawal Agreement Bill is a very complex piece of legislation. The Bill itself runs to over 100 pages and impacts on literally dozens of other UK laws. I have been told that an experienced lawyer, with detailed knowledge of the UK constitution and EU law would need at least two weeks to read and understand this piece of legislation and its consequences. And its consequences are inevitably very far reaching, touching any number of areas of law. Moreover, the Bill confers executive powers in a number of areas. If it would take a trained and experienced expert two weeks to merely understand the Bill, it would inevitably require several weeks for MPs to understand the Bill and its implications, to debate the important points and to consider any number of amendments that Members could propose.

The notion that such an important Bill – which will no doubt have consequences for decades to come – should be passed by Parliament without proper scrutiny is horrific and fundamentally undemocratic. Indeed it undermines the very purpose of Parliament – “to hold the executive to account and scrutinise legislation.” Therefore, the inevitable conclusion to this is that, regardless of any arguments around Brexit itself, every MP who voted in favour of this motion is guilty of an egregious dereliction of duty.

You sir, owe your constituents and your country a profound and unreserved apology.

Yours sincerely
